Sewer Pipe Chimney in Plainfield, VT

At first glance, this chimney, which is venting a woodstove, looked like any other chimney. It had brick on all 4 sides and a terracotta tile liner. But upon inspection of the attic, our technician saw that the bricks did not extend all the way through the house. Instead, this sewer pipe ran through the attic with no bricks surrounding it – yikes!

The facts:

A terracotta tile lined chimney must be surrounded by bricks on all sides the entire length of the flue.

A chimney liner must be listed and tested. Sewer pipe is not designed to withstand the corrosion or high temperatures that it is exposed to in this application.
