A thorough inspection of our client’s fireplace revealed several issues. The prefabricated fireplace’s chimney pipe had become disconnected which was likely caused by improper sweeping tools used in the past. This disconnection could allow smoke and other gases to enter the wooden chimney chase. The fireplace hearth was found to be built right on top of plywood which did not provide enough protection from hot embers and the radiant heat given from the fireplace. Due to the fireplace exceeding 50 years old it was determined that a full replacement of the fireplace and chimney was the best plan of action. The entire fireplace and chimney were replaced with a modern version and plywood under the hearth was replaced with a heat rated material. From there the stones were reinstalled.
