Chimney Inspection in Stowe, VT
Chimney Savers was engaged to conduct an inspection of a 10-year-old prefabricated fireplace in Stowe, Vermont. The client reported an unusual smoke odor during the use of the fireplace, prompting the inspection.
Our findings indicated that the area between the stone facade and the metal fireplace had not been adequately sealed. Consequently, smoke was able to escape into this gap and ascend into the chase. Additionally, we discovered that the chase above the roof was improperly flashed and contained a significant opening.
To assess the damage comprehensively, we proceeded with further investigation, which involved the removal of the chimney and fireplace. This revealed the full extent of smoke infiltration into the chimney chase. Based on our assessment, we recommended the removal of the soot-covered insulation within the chase, replacement of the header above the fireplace due to overheating concerns, and a complete replacement of the fireplace and chimney system.
Prefabricated fireplaces are frequently encountered in ski areas, and this issue is not uncommon during other chimney inspections we conduct in Stowe.
