Chimney Inspection in Montpelier, VT

We recently conducted a chimney inspection in Montpelier, Vermont, for a client who had recently acquired a 1920s home featuring a wood-burning stove. The installation of the stove appeared to be of high quality, specifically a Hearthstone model, and adhered to all necessary chimney clearances. However, during our comprehensive inspection, our technician discovered that the chimney was leaking into the attic.

Upon accessing the roof, we observed that the masonry was in a deteriorated state. The bricks were cracked, deteriorating, and had been patched multiple times in the past. While the flashing was in good condition, the source of the leak was traced to water absorption in the bricks, which was infiltrating through the cracks and crevices. Additionally, the chimney lacked a liner, leaving only a single layer of bricks to safeguard the home from heat transfer and the escape of harmful gases.

To address these issues, we recommend dismantling the chimney down to the roofline and rebuilding it with new bricks and lead counter flashing. Furthermore, we suggest waterproofing the new masonry with a breathable water repellent. Lastly, we advise the installation of an insulated stainless steel chimney liner to ensure the safe venting of the wood-burning stove.
