CSIA-Certified, Clean & Thorough

Chimney Sweeping
in Vermont & New Hampshire

Regular chimney sweeping is one of the simplest things you can do to keep your heating system running well and your home in good shape. Over a season of regular use, wood-burning appliances naturally deposit soot and creosote inside the flue — buildup that restricts airflow, causes odors, and gets worse the longer it's left alone.

Chimney Savers provides professional chimney sweeping and cleaning across Vermont and New Hampshire. Our CSIA-certified technicians clean your system thoroughly from top to bottom, perform a detailed inspection while they're there, and leave you with a clear picture of your chimney's condition heading into the next heating season.

Why Regular Chimney
Sweeping Matters

A clean chimney is a safer, more efficient chimney. Here's what staying on top of it actually does for your home.

Removes Creosote Before It Becomes a Problem

Wood-burning fires leave behind creosote — a flammable, tar-like residue that builds up inside the flue over time. Staying on top of annual chimney cleaning keeps levels manageable and prevents the kind of buildup that causes problems down the road.

Keeps Your Draft Clean and Efficient

Soot buildup, debris, and blockages restrict the airflow your stove or fireplace needs to burn cleanly. A freshly swept flue draws better — which means more heat from your fire and less smoke finding its way back into the room.

Catches Small Issues Early

Our technicians inspect the system as part of every sweep. Any developing issues — a small crack, a damper that's starting to stick, a cap that's shifted — get flagged while they're still easy and inexpensive to address.

We Leave Your Home the Way We Found It

We use drop cloths, shoe covers, and proper vacuuming equipment on every job. The soot and ash stay in the chimney, not on your floors or furniture.

Trusted by Your Neighbors

I would highly recommend Chimney Savers for the cleaning and inspection of your wood burning stove/fireplace. Extremely through, knowledgeable and clean. After having our fireplace inspected and cleaned we did not have to cleanup after him. We were notified when he was on his way and when to expect him. Very happy with the entire process.

Not sure if you're due for a chimney sweep?

Here are some common signs it's time.

Your Stove or Fireplace Gets Regular Use

If you've been burning wood, pellets, or any solid fuel regularly, annual sweeping is the standard recommendation. Heavy users often benefit from cleaning twice a year.

Animal Activity in the Flue

Scratching, chirping, or rustling sounds from the chimney mean something has likely moved in — and the flue needs to be cleared and inspected before the system is used again.

Smoke, Odors, or Poor Draft

Back-puffing smoke, a persistent musty or smoky smell when the fireplace isn't in use, or airflow that just doesn't seem right are all signs worth having looked at.

It's Been More Than a Year

If you can't remember your last cleaning, or you've had a chimney fire since your last sweep, it's time to schedule one before the next heating season.

We Walk You Through What We Found

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to get my chimney cleaned?

There are two main reasons to clean your chimney regularly: safety & performance. If you use a fireplace or woodstove in your home, the byproducts of burning wood are left in your chimney. The most common byproduct is creosote, a black, tar-like substance that is extremely combustible. When creosote ignites inside your chimney, it can cause a chimney fire. Buildup inside the chimney can also diminish the performance of your appliance, causing it to run less efficiently. A chimney sweep will remove creosote, soot, ash and any blockages throughout your heating system, keeping you safe and your heating system running at peak efficiency.

What if I burn oil, pellet, or gas? Do I still need a chimney cleaning?

Yes. Chimney cleanings are not just important for wood-burning appliances. Oil and gas-fired appliances, as well as pellet stoves, should also be inspected and cleaned on an annual basis to remove any debris or buildup and to optimize your heating system’s performance.

How often should I have my chimney inspected and cleaned?

According to the Fire Protection Agency, chimneys should be inspected yearly and, if necessary, cleaned. The amount of buildup in your chimney will vary depending on how often you use it, the construction of the chimney, the design of the appliance, and the type of fuel.

When is the best time to have my chimney cleaned?

We believe spring is the best time to get your chimney cleaned for a few reasons. Think of the old saying, “The early bird catches the worm.” When you clean your chimney in the spring and beat the fall rush, you get convenience of scheduling and often save money (we offer discounted prices in the spring as an incentive). In addition, if the inspection shows that repairs are needed, you are allowing yourself plenty of time to get them done before the next heating season. Spring is also best for prolonging your chimney’s life. The deposits that build up in your chimney are acidic and eat away at the inside of the chimney; removing them earlier in the year (after the heating season) will result in less deterioration. Finally, cleaning your chimney early in the year can eliminate odors caused by creosote and ash in your chimney, keeping your home smelling fresh. Read more in our blog post on Angie’s List. (link)
